A gel manicure usually lasts 3 to 4 weeks before it needs to be removed or redone. How long yours lasts depends on three things: how well the nail is prepped, how carefully the gel is applied, and how you treat your hands between visits.
What makes a gel manicure last longer?
Careful prep. Gel bonds best to a clean, dry nail plate. In a Russian manicure, our technicians do detailed cuticle work before any product goes on, so the gel can sit close to the cuticle and grows out more neatly.
Thin, even layers. Thick gel is more likely to lift. Several thin coats, each fully cured, hold better than one heavy coat.
Sealed edges. Capping the free edge of the nail with gel helps stop chips starting at the tips.
Why does gel chip or lift early?
- Oils or moisture left on the nail before application
- Using your nails as tools: opening cans, scraping labels
- Long soaks in hot water or harsh cleaning products without gloves
- Picking or peeling at a lifted corner, which also damages the nail underneath
How can I make my gel manicure last?
- Apply cuticle oil once a day. We like the Margaret Dabbs PURE Cuticle Oil because the rollerball makes it easy to keep in your bag.
- Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning.
- Book a fill or removal at 3 to 4 weeks instead of waiting for it to grow out.
- If a corner lifts, don't peel it. Book a quick nail repair instead.
Is gel bad for your nails?
Not when it's applied and removed properly. Most damage comes from peeling gel off at home, which pulls away layers of the natural nail. Professional removal takes 15 to 35 minutes and starts at $23 at Tempt(d) Studio.
