Hair colour fades when water, heat, sun and minerals open the hair cuticle and let colour molecules escape. To make salon colour last: wash less often and with cooler water, use colour-safe sulfate-free products, protect your hair from heat and sun, and remove mineral buildup.
Why does my hair colour fade so fast?
- Washing every day, especially with hot water
- Shampoos with harsh sulfates
- Heat styling without a heat protectant
- Sun, chlorine and salt water
- Minerals in tap water, which can dull colour and turn blonde brassy
How do I make my colour last longer?
- Wait 48 to 72 hours after colouring before your first wash.
- Wash 2 to 3 times a week with lukewarm water. Use a dry shampoo like K18 AirWash in between.
- Switch to colour-safe care, like Mon Platin Color Save Shampoo and Color Save Serum.
- Always use heat protection. K18 HeatBounce protects up to 232°C.
- Remove mineral buildup once a week with Color Wow Dream Filter.
How do I stop blonde hair turning brassy?
Use a violet-pigmented shampoo once or twice a week to neutralize yellow tones. Try Keune Silver Saviour Shampoo and Conditioner, or Mon Platin Blond Highlights Shampoo. Don't overuse them, or blonde can turn slightly purple.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I get a colour refresh?
Root touch-ups usually every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how different your colour is from your natural shade. At Tempt(d) Studio, root touch-ups start at $140, using ammonia-free colour.
Does toner help?
Yes. A toner refreshes the tone of highlights between appointments. It can be added to a highlights service for $80.
